6. Inquiry into Racial Vilification

The committee's inquiry into racial vilification is investigating the prevalence of incidents of vilification and threats of physical violence in the Territory, based on racial, linguistic, ethnic, or religious background, and status as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person - and the accessibility and effectiveness of mechanisms for reporting such incidents.

Helping you get involved

The committee wants to make participating in this inquiry as easy as possible for you. When you write to us:

• We can keep what you write confidential. Most submissions are usually published on our website. You can ask us to consider not publishing your submission if it contains information which might put you or others in danger.
• You can write in a language other than English. You can write to the committee in your first language if you are not confident about writing in English.
• We can keep documents you share confidential. Sometimes people share emails or messages with us as evidence to support what they tell us. You can ask us to consider not publishing other documents you share with us if it contains personal information or might put you or others in danger.

If you are invited to talk to the committee in a hearing:

• We can let you talk to us in a video call. Most hearings are held in person at the Assembly building, but this can be overwhelming for some people. We can let you call in from somewhere you feel more comfortable talking to us.
• We can organise an interpreter so you can talk to us in your first language. Presenting to a committee can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not a confident English speaker. We can organise to have someone who speaks your language to interpret between you and the committee.
• We can make hearings family friendly. Life can be busy, especially if you’re looking after young children. We can let you talk to us from home by video call, or let your children join you at the committee table if you talk to us in person.
• We can let you talk to us privately. Most hearings are public, recorded, and live-broadcast on Video on Demand. We can let you talk to us with no one else in the room and with no live broadcast or public recording if what you want to share with us might put you or others in danger.
