Assembly committees have roles in government and the Assembly given by legislation. These roles include:

The Speaker allocates these tasks to committees in two schedules. One schedule is for general statutory functions, and one is for appointments to bodies such as governing boards and advisory councils.

As well as the schedules, five Acts allocate roles directly to committees. This is to minimise any possible conflicts of interest with the Speaker’s role. These Acts give roles to committees according to their responsibilities, as below:

ActAllocated to committee responsible for
Auditor-General Act 1996Auditor-General
Electoral Act 1992Electoral matters
Integrity Commission Act 2018Corruption and integrity in public administration
Legislative Assembly (Office of the Legislative Assembly) Act 2012Internal administration and procedure of the Assembly
Ombudsman Act 1989Corruption and integrity in public administration

The Speaker's schedules can help directorates in meeting their legal requirements, and those of their ministers.

Committee staff are available to assist with queries. Contact information for the Assembly's standing committees is available on their webpages here.
