From March 2026, we’re upgrading the Assembly building’s public entrance to make it more accessible and secure. While this work is underway, there are changes to building access, tours, on-site education, and room hire.

Building access

The Assembly building remains open to the public during construction, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm. Please use the temporary entrance, located to the right of the construction zone.

The temporary entrance provides all regular services:

Security screening still applies to everyone entering the building. Bags will be x-rayed and visitors will walk through a metal detector. If you can’t use a walk-through metal detector, our attendants can provide alternative screening.

More information if available on planning your visit and building accessibility.

Public tours

Our free public tours are still running every Thursday at 1pm during construction. Tours depart from the temporary entrance.

Two artworks – Klaus Moje’s Fused Glass (1998) and Elizabeth Paterson’s The commonplace of Canberra (2009)– are not on display during this period. They will return when the upgraded entrance is re-opened.

Information on tours, including any cancellations, is available here.

On-site education

Education programs are continuing with reduced group sizes. All on-site programs are capped at 50 people due to reduced teaching space.

We also offer alternatives, so no one misses out:

More information is available for primary, secondary, and public sector programs

Room hire

The Assembly’s reception room in unavailable for hire during the upgrade. The first-floor exhibition room is still available, but with reduced availability.

Visit the room hire page for information and booking forms.
