There are three tours of the Legislative Assembly building available to the public:
- A 60-minute public tour run every Thursday at 1pm
- A self-guided tour of art in the Assembly building's public spaces, and
- Bespoke tours for groups over 5 or more people.
Weekly public tour
We run a free, 60-minute tour of the Legislative Assembly building every Thursday at 1pm. Led by one of our educators, the tour introduces you to the inner workings of your local parliament, how it represents you, and how you can get involved.
Tour highlights
- Find out about how the Assembly works, with a glance back over its history, how it has changed since we achieved self-government in 1989, its electorates, and how its members are elected.
- Visit the two committee rooms, the 'engine rooms' of parliament where small groups of MLAs meet to do the look in-depth into proposed laws, public spending, and important local issues.
- Get up close with some of our favourite pieces in the Assembly's art collection, including The Great Centenary Tapestry (2013), intricate weaving from the Pacific nation of Kiribati, and the Ngunnawal possum skin cloak.
- Step inside the heart of the Assembly, the debating chamber designed by Mitchell, Giurgola and Thorp who also designed Australian Parliament House).
Tours on sitting and non-sitting days each include an extra highlight:
- On sitting days, the tour finishes in the Assembly chamber before 2.00pm so you can stay to watch question time (optional)
- On non-sitting days, step onto the chamber floor and experience what its like to sit in a member's seat.
