Public Hearing
Inquiry into Racial Vilification
On Monday 9 May 2022 the Standing Committee on Education and Community Inclusion (the Committee) will hold its first public hearing for the Inquiry into Racial Vilification.
The following witnesses will appear before the Committee:
- Children and Young People’s Commissioner (ACT Human Rights Commission)
- ACT Council of Social Service
- Federation of the Chinese Community of Canberra
- Ms Tara Cheyne MLA, Minister for Human Rights and Multicultural Affairs
- Discrimination Commissioner (ACT Human Rights Commission)
The hearing will be held in the Prince Edward Island room, ACT Legislative Assembly. It will also be broadcast. A video recording and a transcript will be made available after the hearing on the Committee’s website.
Committee Chair Mr Michael Pettersson MLA said that “the hearing will be a valuable opportunity to hear from government, peak bodies and human rights organizations about experiences of racial vilification in the ACT and mechanisms for complaint and redress”.
The Inquiry into Racial Vilification will investigate the prevalence of vilification and threats of physical violence in the Territory, based on racial, linguistic, ethnic, or religious background, and status as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, and the accessibility and effectiveness of mechanisms for reporting such incidents.
