MEDIA RELEASE
Report tabled for the inquiry into the Terrorism (Extraordinary Temporary Powers) Amendment Bill 2022
The Standing Committee on Justice and Community Safety published a report today, including two recommendations with respect of the Terrorism (Extraordinary Temporary Powers) Amendment Bill 2022.
The Committee has recommended that the Assembly pass the bill but has asked that the government review the treatment of minors to ensure that the legislation achieves its intent.
The Chair of the Committee, Mr Peter Cain said, ‘There are extraordinary powers in the legislation, and therefore it is appropriate that they were independently reviewed by this Committee to ensure that they are still required and that the human rights protections are appropriate.’
The Committee thanks those who contributed through submissions and who appeared at the public hearing on 6 June 2022.
Under the Assembly’s standing orders, the Government is required to respond to committee reports within four months of tabling.
