Inquiry into the Period Products and Facilities (Access) Bill 2022 Report tabled
Mr James Milligan MLA, Acting Chair of the Assembly’s Standing Committee on Health and Community Wellbeing, today tabled a report in the Inquiry into the Period Products and Facilities (Access) Bill 2022.
The Period Products and Facilities (Access) Bill 2022 was presented by Ms Suzanne Orr on 4 August 2022. The Bill aims to improve access to period products for those in need in the community and to improve access to period management facilities in various parts of the Territory Government funded workforce.
The Inquiry included a public hearing during which the Committee heard compelling evidence about the breadth of period poverty and the shame and stigma experienced by those affected.
The Committee made three recommendations, that the Bill be revised to:
- include an understanding of the term ‘dignity’ that reflects the nuance and diversity of the meaning for different populations; and
- demonstrates knowledge, in relation to access to toilet and sanitary facilities, of other relevant legislation.
The Committee also recommends further consultation with service providers and other community members identified in the Bill concerning supports needed to provide period products.
“The Committee would like to thank the community for its interest and participation in this Inquiry. We believe that the information gleaned from the Inquiry captured in this Report will help ensure that the Bill will fulfil its intended aims,” said Mr James Milligan MLA, Acting Chair of the Standing Committee on Health and Community Wellbeing.
