MEDIA RELEASE

NEW INQUIRY – Recovery Plan for Nursing & Midwifery Workers

On 3rd August 2022, a petition of 2697 Canberrans calling for a recovery plan for nursing and midwifery workers was presented in the ACT Legislative Assembly. This is the largest petition presented to the Assembly so far this term. The petition was referred to the Standing Committee on Health & Community Wellbeing.

Today, the committee has announced it will undertake an inquiry into the matters raised in the petition.

“The Committee knows that the last few years have seen all frontline healthcare workers, particularly nurses and midwives, facing stress, fatigue, and burnout. The Committee is keen to inquire into this issue and provide solutions-focussed recommendations to Government with a particular focus on workforce planning, staff shortages and skill-mix issues”.

Submissions are now open and will close 5:00 pm, Friday 9th December 2022.

The Committee then intends on conducting public hearings in the first half of 2023 with a view to finalise and present a report shortly after.

The Terms of Reference for the inquiry, the petition, and information about how to make a submission are available on the Assembly webpage.
