MEDIA RELEASE

Inquiry into Giralang shops

An Assembly Committee today published an interim report with 13 recommendations and 6 findings for the Inquiry into Giralang shops.

On 10 February 2021 petition 4-21 was tabled in the Assembly, sponsored by Ms Suzanne Orr MLA, it was signed by 584 residents and sought an update on the progress of the Giralang shops development. The petition was referred to the Standing Committee on Planning, Transport and City Services under Standing Order 99A. The Committee agreed to inquire into and report on petition 4-21 in relation to the Giralang shops development.

“During our inquiry, the Committee has so far heard from the site lessee and property developer, Giralang residents, and the Minster for Planning and Land Management through submissions and three public hearings,” said the Chair of the Planning, Transport and City Services Committee, Jo Clay MLA.

“We’ve considered the issues and made a number of interim recommendations. These cover the crown lease, suggest a memorandum of understanding between the property developer and ACT Government, and make recommendations for site maintenance and public realm improvements. The Committee has also recommended a further update on the progress of the Giralang shops development be provided to it by July 2022.”

“We intend to finalise this inquiry with a view to updating the community on the progress of the development of the site in mid-2022.”
