Call for submissions on the Building and Construction Legislation Amendment Bill 2019

The Standing Committee on Economic Development and Tourism is calling for submissions to its inquiry into the Building and Construction Legislation Amendment Bill 2019.

Significant proposed changes in the bill include:

• Introducing director liability and allowing rectification orders against directors and partners under the Construction Occupations (Licencing) Act 2004;
• Granting new powers to building inspectors to direct builders and landowners to correct non-compliant or unsafe work;
• Permitting the Registrar to publicise stop work notices;
• Allowing construction licensees to enter into enforceable undertakings for rectification work;

The bill and accompanying explanatory statement can be viewed on the ACT Legislation Register at Building and Construction Legislation Amendment Bill 2019.

On 24 October the Legislative Assembly referred the bill to the Committee with a requirement to report back on 26 November 2019. This inquiry is in addition to the Committee’s ongoing inquiry into building quality.

Written submissions should be lodged by close of business on 13 November 2019.
