Proposed firearms legislation report published

Today the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs tabled out of session its report into the Firearms (Public Safety) Amendment Bill 2026, Firearms (Firearm Prohibition Orders) Amendment Bill 2026 and E-Petition 002-26: Firearms reform – evidence based police and proper consultation.

The Report makes 11 recommendations.

Committee Chair, Chiaka Barry MLA said:

It is clear to the Committee from this inquiry that there are strongly held views in relation to the best way to improve public safety with respect to firearms. The Committee has made several recommendations with the aim of ensuring that the proposed legislation is effectively communicated to those it will affect, and that unintended consequences are avoided to the greatest extent possible.
