About the Work

Dörte Conroy’s Cross Variation series employs colour and form to deceive the eye into seeing a ‘cross’: they are in fact quite irregular on close inspection. The box-like depth of the works add to this illusion, producing deep shadows. These visually rich works are expertly fabricated with attention to both the carpentry involved and the immaculate painted surface.

About the Artist

Conroy was born in Hamburg, Germany and moved to Australia 1958, living and working in Canberra. Her initial training was in Graphic Design, and in 2006–7 she graduated Master of Art (Visual Art) Sculpture, from the Canberra School of Art, ANU.

She exhibited regular solo shows with the Helen Maxwell Gallery, an influential space in Canberra’s art scene for many years, and was included in themed group exhibitions such as: In the presence of passion (2003), Spoiled earth: war on land ( 2003), and The human touch (2005) and Waterworks (2002) at that gallery. Conroy now occupies a studio at M16.

Her work is held in Artbank, as well as in private collections.
