About the Work

Portals_ 2023 was first exhibited as a VR installation at CCAS (Manuka) in 2023. Later that year she presented a version of it in an Assembly EASS joint exhibition. Matthews has now formatted this video for our screen-based collection.

Sites shown in the video are: Odgers Lane, Marcus Clarke, Jolimont, and Hobart Place, and were commissioned for Uncharted Territory, Canberra's new arts and innovation festival celebrating creativity, experimentation and ground-breaking ideas.

About the Artist

Kate Matthews graduated from the School of Art & Design, ANU in 2019. Her work has been supported by several grants including: Braddon’s Beat (2020), ACT Government funded project activating Braddon’s public space creating a community led paste-up mural; Future Faces (2020), ACT Youth Week funded project empowering young people to visualise their idea of a future in Canberra; Creative Endeavour Grant, COVID-19 artist relief funding to publish a photobook on an investigation of ACT and surrounding NSW public spaces 2020/2021.

She has undertaken residencies such as Home Economix Artist Lab: Collaborative Artist, 2021; 2020 EASS 12 month supported darkroom Residency, PhotoAccess, Canberra; and Craft ACT: Craft & Design Internship, 2019.

Matthews has presented solo exhibitions as well as shown  in several group exhibitions.
