About the Work

This colour screenprint of the Starlight sign was made by an artist well-known for his interest in urban landscapes during a residency at Megalo Print Studio in 2012. The Starlight Drive-in theatre in Watson opened in 1957, a time when going to the drive-in was a popular family outing, and closed in 1993. It has the honour of being the first neon sign in Canberra.

About the Artist

Dickinson was born in Swindon, England, lived in London until 2002 then moved to Newcastle, Australia. He trained as a textile designer and works as a freelancer, designing graphics and textiles for the fashion industry. Throughout the nineties he designed for number of large brands and clothing chains in the UK and continues working for some of these companies.

He credits the 2012 Megalo residency as changing his career focus: “Newcastle Productions changed from a hobby into a career when I was accepted as artist in residence at Megalo Print Studio in Canberra. This gave me the time to draw the city and make a body of work that I could sell on a larger scale in Canberra galleries, museums and shops."
