About the Work
These maps were printed from the plates originally engraved by John Carmichael for Major Mitchell in 1834. Mitchell was the Surveyor-General of New South Wales 1827–1855. The plates were reprinted using traditional methods by master printmaker Basil Hall at Studio One (now Megalo Print Studio) one of Australia’s finest printmaking workshops, under the auspices of the Association of Consulting Surveyors. Mitchell’s maps point to the earliest European presence in our region and the information he gathered was the backbone for the drafting of the Australian Capital Territory. Republished in 1994 by the Archives Authority of New South Wales from the original copper plates in limited edition.
