About the Work
The subject of Pratt’s highly accomplished woodcuts is often a figure in dramatic movement, set against an environment either natural or urban. The artist writes of the street zone as ‘like a stage with a broad repertoire of movement and intent— walking, running, conveying, waiting, conversing.’ Pratt’s compositions owe much to his ongoing interest in, and practice of, collage. There is a strong sense of human agency in this work. The ‘hazard’ stripes contribute a feeling of danger or urgency, but the determined figure remains the dominant element, forging ahead into a future of their own making.
