About the Work
Joel Arthur focuses on the intersection of genre and mode in painting, fusing the genre of landscape with external elements such as still life models and irregular motifs to examine the relationship between abstraction and descriptive painting. He says: ‘These paintings are transitory landscapes that have been inhabited, con- structed and used as a place of meeting. They are artificial yet natural zones which are designed to provide relief from the concrete world of the city.'
