About the Work
The devastating bushfires in Canberra in 2003 offered artists unexpected views of a landscape they knew well. Rea responded to the startling, high-toned signs of rebirth that appeared in the blackened forests. Against the charred timber verticals, the bright green epidormic buds heralded regrowth, a metaphor for the resilience of the Australian bush and Canberra’s community.
