About the Work
Mahala Hill was the 2017 recipient of the Speaker’s EASS Award. She has already been acknowledged nationally, selected for the 2018 Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize. Hill’s sculptural work is based on observation of the natural world, combined with a sense of foreboding and loss in the face of cataclysmic change. She adopts a process of ‘burn out’ to create the fragile figures, a process that mimics the apocalypse she imagines.
About the Artist
Hill graduated Bachelor of Visual Arts [Honours] from the Australian National University in 2017. She received an impressive 6 EASS awards on graduation. She has exhibited frequently since 2015, in a variety of venues in Canberra and the local region. In 2018 she was selected as a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, run by the South Australian Museum and toured to the National Archives of Australia, Canberra.
