About the Work
Anita McIntyre’s ceramic practice is based on her experience of the Australian land- scape, be it the local Brindabella ranges, the open spaces of the central desert or, as in this work, ancient rock formations found in the Kimberley, WA. The ceramicist’s natural affinity with clay and ochres finds great resonance when depicting the red cliffs and gorges of this area, using techniques that have been used for centuries, such as terra sigillata, an ultrarefined clay slip. Initially trained in painting, McIntyre taught at the ANU School of Art Ceramics Workshop from 1977 until her retirement in 2007.
