About the Work

Glass artist Holly Grace has been increasingly drawn towards the history of human engagement with our nearby alpine and sub-alpine regions, both before and after European settlement, and her Billycan series is a result of these explorations. The surfaces of her glass billycan are sandblasted and etched with landscape imagery based on her own photography; the translucency of the glass allows light to reveal the image. The subject of this work—Gavels Hut—is in the Kosciusko National Park, and was built by Dick Schofield and Roy Rawson in 1931 for grazing.

About the Artist

Since graduating with an MA from Monash University in 2004 she has undertaken workshops with influential glass artists Lino Tagliapietra (Italy), Jiri Harcuba and Ursula Meeker (Germany) Harumi Yukutake (Japan); and mentorships with Tobias Mohl (Denmark), Neil Wilkin (UK), and Viki Noorman Koefoed (Denmark). The artist has worked and exhibited in Australia and overseas since 2001. She lived and worked in Canberra, working with the facilities at the Canberra Glassworks, for many years.
