About the Work

Duncan says that as he paints, he feels not just a connection to his ancestors, but as if they are guiding or directing his actions. Working through this intuitive process, he says he feels a strong sense of approval when he is on the right track. In this way, he has come to understand that keeping culture strong and sharing his knowledge with younger generations is his life’s work and a sacred duty. Kangaroo Hunt of 2023 exhibits a mastery of his technique and a new direction into colour

About the Artist

Duncan Smith is a Wiradjuri man from Central Western New South Wales. He was born in Wellington, NSW and moved to Canberra with his mother 30 years ago. Smith’s work relate to his travels in Wiradjuri country and the landscape of the Canberra region: the places he knows and visits regularly. Through this practice of travel and painting, his work with elders and his research into traces of indigenous history such as the scar trees, he has come to understand that keeping culture strong and sharing his knowledge with younger generations is his life’s work, a means to reclaim heritage, and a sacred duty.

Duncan, who learnt how to paint from his mother, is a now a professional practicing artist, well known in Canberra and the Region. Smith is also a professional performer. He established the Wiradjuri Echoes Consultancy, an ACT Indigenous Performance/Dance Group, sought after for events such as the National Folk Festival, the Multicultural Festival and citizenship ceremonies.
