10 May 2019 | Canberra, Australia | Event
Come and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first sitting of the Legislative Assembly from 10am 'til 2pm this Saturday, 11 May 2020.
The day kicks off at 10:00 am and include tours of the building and 'The Great Democratic Sausage Sizzle'. One of the main events of the day will be a debate, presided over by the Speaker, Joy Burch MLA, on the topic 'One house is better than two', featuring students from year 12 Canberra schools.
The open day is a great opportunity for people to get involved. There will be tours of the building and visitors are invited to watch the debate from the public gallery.
Other events include a dance performance by Wiradjuri Echoies, choral performances by the Canberra Children’s Choir and the Over 55's Choir. There will also be tours of Assembly artworks and an exhibition on the history of self-government in the ACT. The first 100 visitors (one per person/family) will receive the gift of a Correa “Canberra Bells” plant.
The ACT Legislative Assembly is unique in Australia. Formed in 1989, it has 25 MLAs, one chamber, and is responsible for both local and territory functions.
