MEDIA RELEASE

Report tabled – Inquiry into the Disability Inclusion Bill 2024

The Standing Committee on Education and Community Inclusion Committee today tabled the committee’s report on its Inquiry into the Disability Inclusion Bill 2024.

The committee received 12 submissions and held one public hearing.

The committee report makes 12 recommendations to enhance the coordinated approach to disability inclusion outlined in the bill.

The report is available on the Assembly’s website at: https://www.parliament.act.gov.au/parliamentary-business/in-committees/recent-reports

Chair of the committee, Mr Michael Pettersson MLA said the bill provides a framework to address barriers experienced by people with disability in the ACT.

‘The committee heard throughout the inquiry the phrase “nothing about us, without us”,’ Mr Pettersson said.

‘One of the strengths of this bill is the active involvement of people with disability, particularly through consultation, to ensure their lived experience guides government action to make a more inclusive Canberra.’

‘We thank the ACT Government, Ms Suzanne Orr MLA, and those organisations and individuals who participated in this inquiry. In particular, the committee is grateful to all individuals who shared their personal experiences.’

Under the Assembly’s standing orders, the ACT Government is required to table its response to the report within four months.
