Report tabled – Inquiry into Skateboarding and Skate Parks in the ACT

Mr Michael Pettersson MLA, Chair of the Standing Committee on Education and Community Inclusion Committee today tabled the committee’s report on its Inquiry into Skateboarding and Skate Parks in the ACT.

The committee received six submissions, held one public hearing and conducted site visits to skate parks across Canberra.

The report makes 33 recommendations to improve the planning, design and maintenance of skating facilities and support local skating initiatives.

The report is available on the Assembly’s website at: https://www.parliament.act.gov.au/parliamentary-business/in-committees/recent-reports

‘There is a strong skating culture in the ACT, which can be seen at all levels from children at learn to skate classes, through to events such as the Belco Bowl Jam which attract visitors from across the Australia and the world,’ Mr Pettersson said.

‘The committee heard that if we are to continue this culture, there must be a strategic approach to the design and maintenance of skate parks to ensure our facilities are modern, fit for purpose and support skaters of all levels.’

‘It is also important that government raise awareness of Canberra’s skating history and continue to support local initiatives that encourage people to take up skating and the health benefits it offers.’

‘We thank the ACT Government, and those organisations and individuals who participated in this inquiry. In particular, the committee is grateful to the individuals who provided informative tours of ACT skate parks during the committee’s site visits.’

Under the Assembly’s standing orders, the ACT Government is required to table its response to the report within four months.
