MEDIA RELEASE

Report tabled – Inquiry into Raising Children in the ACT

Ms Jo Clay MLA, Chair of the Standing Committee on Health and Community Wellbeing today tabled the committee’s report on its Inquiry into Raising Children in the ACT.

The committee received 81 submissions and held five public hearings.

The committee’s report makes 33 recommendations.

‘The ACT has the lowest fertility rate of any Australian state or territory,’ Ms Clay said.

‘The committee heard that the key factors affecting ACT residents’ decisions around raising children include the cost of living — particularly the cost and accessibility of housing, childcare and health care — environmental concerns, and the availability of family and community support.’

‘Throughout the inquiry the committee was told that a variety of policy solutions are needed to respond to these complex issues. The committee’s recommendations include a range of practical actions to support prospective parents, current parents, and children in the ACT.’

‘The committee thanks the ACT Government, as well as the many individuals and organisations who shared their personal experiences and their expertise throughout the inquiry.’

The report is available on the Assembly’s website at www.parliament.act.gov.au/parliamentary-business/in-committees/recent-reports

Under the Assembly’s standing orders, the ACT Government is required to table its response to the report within four months.
