Territory Plan Draft Variation No: 350 – Changes to the definition of ‘single dwelling block’

The Assembly’s Standing Committee on Planning and Urban Renewal has tabled its report on the Inquiry into Draft Variation No 350: Changes to the definition of ‘single dwelling block’.

The draft variation proposed to amend the Territory Plan definition of a ‘single dwelling block’ by:

• changing the title of the definition from ‘single dwelling block’ to ‘standard block’, where a standard block will be defined as a block with one of the following characteristics –
  • a) originally leased or used for the purpose of one dwelling
  • b) originally leased or used for the purpose of two dwellings on or before 18 October 1993
  • c) created by a consolidation of blocks, at least one of which is covered by a) or b).

The draft variation also identified that these changes mean that:

• proposals for development of standard blocks will now need to adhere to the Multi Unit Housing Development Code (MUHDC).

In their final report the majority of the Committee recommended that Draft Variation No 350: Changes to the definition of ‘single dwelling block’ proceed.

The Chair of the Committee, Ms Caroline Le Couteur MLA stated:

‘Even though this inquiry was not relevant to the majority of Canberrans, the Committee felt that it was important to consider the changes and how they would affect the owners of the affected blocks and neighbouring residents.’
