MEDIA RELEASE

Report on Inquiry into Environment Protection (Fossil Fuel Company Advertising)

Amendment Bill 2024

The Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment, Climate Change and Biodiversity, Dr Marisa Paterson MLA, today published the Committee’s report of its Inquiry into Environment protection (Fossil Fuel Company Advertising) Amendment Bill 2024.

The Committee announced the inquiry on 14 February 2022. The Committee received 16 submissions for the Inquiry.

The Committee’s report made 1 recommendation, which is that the Bill does not pass.

Committee Chair, Dr Paterson said, ‘the Committee is of the view that while there is support for the Bill’s aims, the Bill’s provisions would have limited impact on emissions reduction, add significant complexity, and potentially have repercussions for the ACT’s ability to attract and host national and international sporting events relative to other jurisdictions.’

The Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the inquiry.

The Committee’s report is available on the Assembly’s webpage at https://www.parliament.act.gov.au/parliamentary-business/in-committees/recent-reports
