MEDIA RELEASE

Have your say on the Voting Age

The Legislative Assembly is considering a Bill that would require people aged 16-17 years to vote in Territory elections, and Canberrans are invited to have their say.

Justice and Community Safety Committee has been asked to conduct an inquiry on the Electoral Amendment Bill 2021, and present recommendations to the Assembly, before the Bill is debated.

People can participate in the inquiry by completing an online survey (available at bit.ly/ACT-voting-age) or making a submission.  Further information is available on the committee webpage.

The Chair of the committee, Mr Jeremy Hanson MLA, said ‘We look forward to hearing what Canberrans think about the voting age.  This is a valuable opportunity for community views to inform the Assembly debate on this Bill.’

Submissions close on 28 January 2022, and the online survey closes on 7 February 2022.

The committee will conduct a public hearing on 3 February 2022, and must report back to the Assembly by 3 March 2022.
