MEDIA RELEASE

Inquiry into Engagement with Development Application Processes in the ACT -  REPORT TABLED

The Assembly’s Standing Committee on Planning and Urban Renewal today tabled its report on its Inquiry into Engagement with Development Application Processes in the ACT.

The Chair of the Committee, Ms Caroline Le Couteur MLA stated that:

‘Throughout the course of the Ninth Assembly the Committee have heard many stories from the ACT Community about the Development Application process and how it affects them. Evidence received during the inquiry echoed many of these perspectives and documented the obstacles faced by the ACT Community, developers and the building industry in navigating the Development Application process.’

Ms Le Couteur went on to state that:

‘Whilst the Committee heard opposing views from industry bodies and community groups on many aspects of the process they were in one voice about the need to improve the timeliness, consistency and the accessibility of the development application process in the ACT. The Committee also heard evidence about the need to improve consultation, notification and compliance processes and the need to simplify advice and improve communication with both proponents and the community. Many of the Committee’s recommendations have sought to address these concerns in order to encourage a more transparent and accountable process that all stakeholders are able to engage with.’

Ms Le Couteur also thanked those who contributed to the inquiry:

‘The Committee greatly appreciated the input from community organisations and individuals into what is a lengthy and complex report. I would also like to thank the Minister for Planning and Land Management and officials for contributing their time and expertise to the Committee’s inquiry.’
