2019 09 19 - Inquiry into the management and minimisation of bullying and violence in ACT schools

MEDIA RELEASE

Inquiry into the management and minimisation of bullying and violence in ACT schools

The Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Youth Affairs today tabled its report on its Inquiry into the management and minimisation of bullying and violence in ACT schools, in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

The report makes 23 recommendations and 9 findings.

Chair of the Committee, Michael Pettersson MLA, said the Committee spoke to a range of organisations and individuals as part of the Inquiry and visited 9 schools.

“We have heard very clearly in the course of our Inquiry that teachers are working hard to reduce bullying and violence in our schools.” Mr Pettersson said.

Mr Pettersson notes “more support is needed at the system level in relation to reporting, data collection and complaint handling; this will assist students, parents and school administrators.”

The Committee also agrees that there needs to be ongoing consideration of how social and emotional learning programs are operated in ACT schools.
