Release of Report into a Territory Coat of Arms
Today the Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Transport and City Services, Suzanne Orr MLA, tabled the Committee report on its Inquiry into a Territory Coat of Arms.
The report makes five recommendations, including that the ACT Government clarify the legal standing of the current City of Canberra Coat of Arms and consult with the community to determine a final design of any new Territory or updated City of Canberra Coat of Arms.
The Committee received evidence that the ACT Flag, which depicts a modified version of the City of Canberra Coat of Arms, is problematic from a range of perspectives. Therefore, the report recommends that the ACT Government consult with the community to design a new ACT Flag and develop guidelines for the appropriate use of the Territory’s Official Symbols.
“Through this inquiry we have found that the current City of Canberra Coat of Arms either needs to be updated or a new ACT Coat of Arms should be created,” Ms Orr said.
“We’ve also determined that the design of the ACT flag should be changed, and we have asked for the Government to consult with the community to develop a new design.
“Canberrans want to see symbols that better reflect our modern and inclusive community and this report provides the Government with a clear pathway to make the necessary changes,” Ms Orr concluded.
The inquiry commenced in November 2018, and the Committee received 68 submissions from individuals and organisations presenting their opinions on whether the Territory should adopt a new coat of arms and, if so, what should be depicted on the design.
