COVID-19 - Temporary changes to operations
Updated 3 April 2020
With the declaration of a public health emergency in the ACT, the Speaker, Joy Burch MLA, has introduced a number of changes to normal operating arrangements at the Legislative Assembly precincts. These measures are intended to limit potential exposure to COVID-19 and exercise the Assembly's duty of care to members, staff, and the public.
Further changes to sitting dates
Further to changes to the March sitting dates, which meant the scheduled dates of Tuesday 31 March and Wednesday 1 April did not take place, the Assembly has agreed to revise their sitting calendar up to the end of August. Only the scheduled Thursday sittings will now take place:
- Thursday 7 May
- Thursday 27 August
- Thursday 18 June
- Thursday 13 August
- Thursday 27 August
The Assembly will be focusing on essential business only, and other dates that were published previously, have been cancelled.
New COVID-19 committee is set up
A new committee has been set up to inquire into COVID-19 in the ACT. The committee will be inquiring into the ACT's health and financial response, and other issues related to the pandemic. Information about the committee and its terms of reference will be available soon.
Committee meetings move to video conference
A motion has been passed through the Assembly to change standing orders, to enable committees to meet via video conference. This will allow them to continue their inquiries until normal operating arrangements resume.
Access to the building
The Assembly building remains open to the public. However, anyone who displays flu-like symptoms or who meets isolation criteria issued by the Commonwealth Department of Health is not permitted in the Assembly precincts.
Access to the public galleries in the Chamber and committee rooms has been suspended. You can still watch proceedings either live or on demand through Assembly on Demand.
Tours and groups
The use of reception and exhibition rooms by external groups has been suspended. School and community group visits, seminars and work experience placements at the Assembly have been cancelled.
These arrangements will be reassessed on 30 June, unless advised earlier.
