COVID-19 — Temporary changes to operations

Updated 7 May 2020

With the declaration of a public health emergency in the ACT, the Speaker, Joy Burch MLA, has introduced a number of changes to normal operating arrangements at the Legislative Assembly precincts. These measures are intended to limit potential exposure to COVID-19 and exercise the Assembly's duty of care to members, staff, and the public.

These arrangements will remain in place until further notice. Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with any changes.

Amended sitting calendar

Further to changes to the March sitting dates, which meant the scheduled dates of Tuesday 31 March and Wednesday 1 April did not take place, the Assembly agreed to revise their sitting calendar up to the end of August. Only the scheduled Thursday sittings will now take place:

  • Thursday 7 May
  • Thursday 21 May
  • Thursday 18 June
  • Thursday 4 June
  • Thursday 2 July
  • Thursday 23 July
  • Thursday 30 July
  • Thursday 13 August
  • Thursday 20 August
  • Thursday 27 August

The Assembly will be focusing on essential business only, and other dates that were published previously, have been cancelled.

Changes to committees

COVID-19 pandemic response committee established

A new committee has been set up to inquire into COVID-19 in the ACT. The committee will be inquiring into the ACT's health and financial response, and other issues related to the pandemic. Visit the COVID-19 Response Committee page.

Meetings move to video conference

A motion was passed through the Assembly to change standing orders, to enable committees to meet via video conference. This will allow them to continue their inquiries until normal operating arrangements resume.

Access to the building

As of Wednesday 8 April, the Legislative Assembly building is closed to the public.

Members of the public are still able to contact their MLAs via telephone or email and watch proceedings either live or on demand through Assembly on Demand.

Tours, groups, and events

The use of reception and exhibition rooms by external groups has been suspended. School and community group visits, seminars and work experience placements at the Assembly have been cancelled for the foreseeable future.
