Hello, I’m Joy Burch, the Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly, and it was an honour to be elected as Speaker for this, our Ninth Assembly.
I’ve been member for Brindabella since 2008 and as a former nurse I understand full well, the need of parliament to provide the services and supports that our community needs. The Assembly has grown since it was established in 1989. In the 2016 election we have seen a growth of 17 members to 25 members. We have seen a growth of 17 members from three electorates, to 25 members from five electorates.
You may be interested to know that in this Assembly, we’re the first in Australia to have a parliament with a majority of women. Another interesting fact is this is the only parliament to have state and territory functions, sitting alongside local council functions. So everything we do here affects everyone who lives in our community.
Part of my role is clearly managing proceedings in the Assembly. But another important role is to encourage community participation. To inform the community about what happens in this, your Assembly. So I ask you to come in on a sitting day, watch proceedings online, to participate in our Assembly enquiries, or indeed start up or sign a petition on matters that are important for you.
So welcome to your Assembly and the Assembly website. Please explore the website and all the information it holds and I hope to see you here, in your Assembly, some time soon.
