‘TEAM Commonwealth’ – Celebrating the importance of our communities

‘Commonwealth Day is an opportunity for us, together with our member nations, to reflect on the unique association we share', said Speaker, Mrs Vicki Dunne MLA.

'In particular, this year's theme - Team Commonwealth - promotes the importance of teamwork and collaboration both within and between Commonwealth countries’, Mrs Dunne said. ‘This theme aims to express a spirit of friendship and motivation towards the shared goals and values that exist between members of the Commonwealth.’

‘It is a great reminder of the role we all play in the communities to which we belong. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the broader political community of which we’re all a part.’

The ACT is celebrating Commonwealth Day by staging an event at the Assembly tonight.

The event will be attended by representatives from Commonwealth member countries, and Canberra high school (year 11/12) captains/representatives and principals. Canberra Girls Grammar School Senior Council Chairperson, Phyllida Behm, has been selected this year to read the message from Her Majesty The Queen.

Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation, and the work of the Commonwealth’s organisations, which aim to improve the lives of its citizens.

Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the second Monday in March every year, with events taking place internationally throughout the week.
