2007 ASPG Conference, Adelaide, 23 - 25 August

Responsible Government is based on the concept that governments are accountable to their Parliaments and that parliaments are accountable to the voters. Given recent growth in the power of the Executive, legislatures have developed a variety of ways to maintain and exercise some scrutiny over governments. However, the capacity of voters to maintain an appropriate scrutiny over the parliament is more limited— but no less important. This Conference is dedicated to exploring the ways parliaments are accountable to the people and the means by which they can be made more accountable.

2004 Annual Conference, Perth, 28 - 29 May

The 2004 annual conference was held in May in Perth and had as its theme "the role of Parliament in constitution making and constitutional amendments." A variety of interesting papers were presented, and many are expected to be included in the next edition of Australasian Parliamentary Review.

Importantly, the conference provided an opportunity to breathe new life into the ASPG, and a number of exciting initiatives are being developed. Among these are a regular newsletter, a new editor for the journal and potential involvement of the Pacific and PNG.

It is hoped that the renewed enthusiasm displayed at the conference will flow through to all other areas of activity, including a vibrant ACT Chapter.
